Penguins can’t fly. But they can get airborne. The secret technique that penguins use involves wrapping their bodies in a cloak of air bubbles – and it turns out to be the same technique that engineers use to speed the movement of ships and torpedoes through water

Travel Company Allows Customers To Book Flights With BitcoinAlternative Airlines, a travel company based in the United Kingdom, has partnered with cryptocurrency service Utrust to facilitate payments with crypto. On Nov. 13, the Swiss-based digital payments processor Utrust announced a new partnership with its first merchant in the travel industry, Alternative Airlines. The two companies plan to provide customers with the ability to book flights while paying with cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), Dash, DigiByte (DGB) and Utrust’s native token UTK.
IRS Clarifies Its Confusing ‘Airdrop’ Cryptocurrency Tax PolicyAmerica’s top tax authority, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), has somewhat provided clarification about its recent cryptocurrency tax guidelines. However, their final decision regarding taxing promotional airdrops is yet to be made.Critics pointed out a range of potential problems with the latest guidelines, issued in October. Perhaps most glaring among these issues was a section about “airdrops” — which, in the world of cryptocurrencies, is usually used to refer to promotional giveaways or customer rewards.Per Bloomberg Tax, Christopher Wrobel, an attorney in the IRS Office of the Associate Chief Counsel (Income Tax and Accounting) confirmed that while hard fork-generated revenues are taxable under the latest rulings, the revenue ruling doesn’t apply to promotional airdrop giveaways. But Wrobel did state that the IRS “hasn’t yet decided” whether such promotional airdrops should be treated as taxable.
AFME Calls For Supervisory Convergence On The Regulation Of Crypto-AssetsThe Association for Financial Markets in Europe (AFME) has published a new paper outlining five recommendations for delivering “supervisory convergence on the regulation of crypto-assets” across the region. In other words, the voice of Europe’s wholesale financial markets is saying it wants to encourage collaboration between regulators and those in Europe willing to tap into the cryptocurrency world by drawing up pointers which “work towards a common approach to the regulation and development of crypto-assets in financial services.”

Yesterday, we saw a couple of bearish patterns for bitcoin below the $8,880 resistance against the US Dollar. BTC remained in a bearish zone below the $8,800 level and the 100 hourly simple moving average.
The last rejection was near the $8,780 level and the 100 hourly SMA. A high was formed near $8,784 before the price declined below $8,700. Moreover, the price traded below $8,680 and it is currently testing the $8,640 support area.
If there is an upside correction, the $8,710 level is an immediate resistance. Besides, the 50% Fib retracement level of the recent decline from the $8,784 high to $8,636 low is also near the $8,710 level.

What A Day: D'oh Biden by Brian Beutler, Priyanka Aribindi & Crooked Media (06/19/19)

"I was talking about farting"—Presidential candidate/world’s most awkward person John Hickenlooper

Bidenfreude

Joe Biden told an audience of donors in New York City that his tax policies wouldn’t “fundamentally change” things, including their quality of life, and waxed nostalgic about his working relationships with segregationists when he was a young senator. Guuuulp.
It has not gone over well! Here’s the full rundown.
Biden has been campaigning on his ability to reach consensus with Republicans. As evidence of this, he cited his relationships with now-deceased Sens. James Eastland (D-MS) and Herman Talmadge (D-GA). Biden said Eastland “never called me ‘boy,’ he always called me ‘son,’” and called Talmadge “one of the meanest guys I ever knew,” but added, “at least there was some civility. We got things done.”
Some problems with this!
Several Democratic presidential candidates have condemned Biden’s comments, including Kamala Harris, Cory Booker, Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren, Beto O’Rourke, and Bill de Blasio.
Biden went on to assure his donors that they won’t assume much financial risk by supporting him. “No one’s standard of living will change, nothing would fundamentally change,” he said. But, “when we have income inequality as large as we have in the United States today, it brews and ferments political discord and basic revolution.”
Some problems with this!
There unfortunately aren’t many generous ways to interpret these comments. They have raised concerns across the party about what kind of nominee and president Biden would be, and so far he hasn’t sought to explain himself or walk the comments back. The good news: he’ll almost certainly face questions about them at next week’s debate. popcorn-eating.gif

Under the Radar

The number of refugees—people who’ve been forced to flee violence or persecution—has reached an all-time high of nearly 71 million people worldwide, and includes an estimated 13.6 million people who became refugees in the last year alone, according to the United Nations. Most of the world’s refugees come from just five countries: Syria, Afghanistan, South Sudan, Myanmar, and Somalia, and the greatest number of refugees live in Turkey, Pakistan, Uganda, Sudan, and Germany, respectively.
While presenting the report, the U.N. high commissioner for refugees criticized “inward looking,” wealthy countries, many of which have sought to close their borders to these displaced peoples. That includes, um, us.

What Else

Trump administration officials have tried to convince Congress that Iran has ties to al Qaeda, suggesting the White House may try to use a post-9/11 war authorization as a legal justification for attacking Iran over Congress’s objections. There’s every reason to be skeptical of the administration’s claims, and House Democrats underscored their skepticism by voting to repeal that authorization.
At a House subcommittee hearing on reparations, the writer Ta-Nehisi Coates called on Congress to “reject fair-weather patriotism, to say that a nation is both its credits and its debits,” and to create a commission to study ways the U.S. government can make amends for slavery and its legacy. Coates also rebutted Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, who expressed his opposition to reparations on Capitol Hill this Tuesday.
President Trump’s former Communications Director Hope Hicks stonewalled Democrats during a closed-door interview with the House Judiciary Committee on Tuesday because White House lawyers barred her from answering any questions about her time in the White House. Hey Democrats: instead of hearings nobody can watch with witnesses you won’t force to testify, have you considered the opposite?
Speaking of which, House Democrats may have finally run out of patience with former Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s reluctance to testify, but they still haven’t subpoenaed him. Reminder, again: Republicans hauled former FBI Director Jim Comey up to the Hill within two days of his decision to close the Hillary Clinton email investigation. And you might have noticed Republicans are pretty good at this “winning elections” thing.
The Federal Reserve left interest rates unchanged today, resisting extraordinary and improper pressure from President Trump, who has suggested he might demote Fed Chair Jerome Powell, even though he does not have the legal authority to do so.
International prosecutors indicted three men with ties to Russian intelligence and implicated a senior aide to Vladimir Putin for shooting a missile at Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 over Ukraine in 2014, killing all 298 people on board.
The British research submarine Boaty McBoatface (this is what happens when you let the internet name things) discovered a significant link between Antarctic winds and rising sea temperatures. As the winds have grown stronger because of greenhouse gas buildup and the destruction of the ozone layer, they have caused more turbulence in waters, resulting in rising sea temperatures and sea levels. Not bad, Boaty. But, you know, bad in every other way.
Trans author, activist, and television producer Janet Mock signed a multimillion dollar deal with Netflix to write, direct, and executive produce projects that tell stories about underrepresented people. She is the first out trans woman of color to score a deal like this with a major studio.

Did You See That Thing?

Facebook confirmed this week that it has spent the past year working with 27 nonprofit, tech, and finance partners to create a cryptocurrency called “Libra.” Despite its classification as a cryptocurrency, Libra would be very different than Bitcoin. Facebook imagines it as a “new global currency standard” that’s stable, guaranteed by tangible assets, and part of a larger program that will be able to perform all the functions of a traditional bank (think accounts, loans, ATMs, etc.).
Facebook claims it wants to offer the service to benefit the developing world, and its 1.7 billion adults who don’t have access to banking. This, however, is the same logic it used to promote its plan to offer free internet around the world—a plan that came under fire for attempting to make developing countries dependent on Facebook for access to the internet. On top of that, Facebook’s laundry list of privacy scandals, the rampant misinformation on its platform, and the way it’s been used to subvert elections have naturally made people skeptical that the company should be entrusted with vulnerable people’s money. OTOH maybe we should just blindly trust Zuck again for the 40,000th time.

Is That Hope I Feel?

New York lawmakers have agreed to one of the most ambitious climate plans in the world. The legislation, called the “Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act,” calls for the state to eliminate almost all greenhouse gas emissions with the goal of making the state's economy carbon-free by 2050. Currently, New York sources only 60 percent of its electricity from carbon-free sources.

CMV: 2014 was a horrible, no-good year

I maintain that 2014 was an unusually bad year, and a huge number of amazingly terrible events are concentrated in that year.
#CancelColbert
"CancelColbert" became a trending hashtag, thanks to Twitter activist Suey Park. The hashtag claimed that Stephen Colbert was racist for using "ching chong chinaman" as a part of his act, even though was obviously a joke meant to mock and satirize racists, not be one. The hashtag backfired and pretty much ruined Suey Park's life, as well as contributing to the over-sensitive social justice environment that most people agreed was terrible. But later it was announced that the humorous and successful Colbert Show would indeed be ending for unrelated reasons.
Russian invasion of Ukraine
In the first territorial conquest in Europe since World War II, in early 2014 Russia invaded and annexed the Crimea, and then went on to invade Ukraine. Obama didn't really stand up hard to Putin, he refused to even call it an invasion. The US and EU imposed some weak sanctions that didn't really do anything to move Putin.
MH370 disappearance
A large jet disappeared over Southeast Asia and no one has been able to find out. In addition to the loss of life, this was the start of a years long nightmare for the families of the victims, who have been tortured by endless inquiries and false hopes up to this day. It also resulted in a massive expenditure of resources in the search that ended up with nothing.
Rise of ISIS
No explanation needed. The rise of an explicitly theocratic, and totalitarian state in the Middle East that would result in a great deal more violence, including the beheading of journalists, happened this year. It extended the Syrian civil war and ended any hope of a legitimate opposition to Assad.
Newsweek Satoshi Nakamoto story
Newsweek published a story claiming to unmask the founder of Bitcoin, Satoshi Nakamoto, but this was proven to be false. All that was accomplished was an apparently unrelated man got a ton of unwanted worldwide attention, and the journalist's highest profile story of her career blew up, and millions of people were misled in the process.
Michael Brown shooting
An 18 year old African American man was shot to death by the police. This led to massive riots and unrest in Ferguson, Missouri, which ended up with yet another person dead, a police officer's life was ruined. The entire community of Ferguson was heavily damaged in the resulting violence, and racial tension exploded across the country after this. Polls of how people view race relations, which had been steady for decades, suddenly took a nosedive and we are still in a period of negative race relations now.
MH17 shootdown
Some rebels supplied by the Russian government shot down MH17 - the same airline that suffered the MH370 disappearance. It's such a tragedy for the airline to lose two planes in one year, through no apparent fault of its own. The shooters will never be held responsible because the Russian government will protect them.
Ebola Virus Disease
Ebola is a horrible disease that makes you bleed from your pores until you die. But until 2014, it was thought to be confined to Central Africa and easily controllable to very small outbreaks. But that year there was a huge outbreak in West Africa that killed tens of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of people. They will be forgotten because they were born in a poor developing country. Also some of the brave doctors and nurses who went to help were at high risk and many of them got Ebola and died.
Murder of Felina
Felina was a twitter citizen activist who rallied her fellow Mexicans to report criminal activity in Mexico's drug war through tweets. In this year, the gangs somehow tracked her down, knocked on her door. They forced her to tweet out a picture of herself looking defeated, then later tweeted out a picture of her dead body from her account. The drug lords sent a message that they were king, and the drug war has been accelerating in Mexico ever since.
#GamerGate
A massive controversy erupted online over games journalism, a seemingly obscure topic that nonetheless marked the beginning of the alt right. A lot of people like Milo Yiannopolis and Mike Cernovich first started getting really popular around this time. The alt right had its first big wins and basically took over the Internet. This was the beginning of today's online alt right and alt lite influence. It also resulted in a lot of people getting harassed and bullied online with no effective defense.
"A Rape on Campus"
Probably the worst piece of journalism of the decade. Sabrina Erdely and Rolling Stone published a liar's completely implausible account of being raped by a fraternity at UVA. After going massively viral, after a week or two the story turned out to be false, Rolling Stone didn't even verify basic facts or try to interview the accused. The fraternity was defamed, and real rape victims ever since then have had a harder time being believed. The story damaged Rolling Stone so bad, it contributed to the magazine's being sold off a couple years later.
Iggy Azalea called out for cultural appropriation
Iggy Azalea, a white Australian rapper, was called out for cultural appropriation, which is when a person of the wrong race uses the cultural symbols or clothing of another group. This is a completely stupid controversy since culture is by nature fluid and every race has borrowed and borrows from what other groups have made throughout history. Yet it has become something people bully each other over. Iggy was bullied out of the industry despite having some great songs and doing what she loved.
Republicans gain the Senate
Alright, if you're a Republican you probably don't consider this bad news, but if you're a centrist or a liberal it's definitely bad, since it means that the centrist judge Merrick Garland didn't get confirmed to the Supreme Court and now we will have 5-6 or more conservative judges on the court, completely wrecking its balance. Even if you're a conservative, the fact that the Republicans didn't even hold hearings on Garland's nomination was wrong.
Hillary Clinton decides to run for president
Apparently in December of this year is when Hillary Clinton decided to run for president. The Hillary Clinton campaign was one of the biggest disasters in history. She had to go through scandal after scandal, and the end result was two candidates that the majority of the country didn't like. We've been going into a more and more divisive political time ever since then.
In conclusion, 2014 was the worst year I'd say since 1997. Many negative events and/or trends started then, that are at the root of all our problems today. It's really remarkable how they all managed to happen in 2014. CMV.
This is a footnote from the CMV moderators. We'd like to remind you of a couple of things. Firstly, please read through our rules. [DIPLOMACY] One Last Chance to Avoid Destruction

Our Best and Final Offer to the Separatists
November 1st, 2031
With the liberation of Crimea, the complete withdrawal of all Russian troops and support, and the military build-up occurring on their doorstep, we are reaching out to the separatists through the peace hotline to notify them that Kyiv is making one last attempt at securing an end to the war without any more violence.
We will present our final peace offer with our best possible terms (in light of the current situation), and this offer is being presented on a "take it or leave it" basis. If no deal is reached here to end the war and reintegrate the separatist pseudo-state, then Kyiv sees no alternative than to end the war through military means. A war that the separatists have absolutely no hope of winning, and a war that no one will shield them from or fight on their behalf.
Kyiv's terms are the following:
  1. There will be an immediate and full ceasefire between government and separatist forces. Observers from the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe will monitor this ceasefire as they have done in the past.
  2. "The Workers' and Peasants' Armed Forces", the "People's Commissariat of Internal Affairs", and any other paramilitaries, mercenaries, policing forces, or armed groups will surrender in their entirety to the Armed Forces of Ukraine and will relinquish all of their weapons, munitions, vehicles, and other means of waging war in a process of complete disarmament.
  3. Safe and effective delivery of humanitarian aid to separatist-controlled territory will be allowed for, and will not be interfered with under pain of criminal prosecution.
  4. The executive branch of the government of the "United People's Soviet Republic" and the following persons in particular will be taken into custody by the Armed Forces of Ukraine. These persons are: Vadim Zaibert, Vladislav Surkov, Alexander Borodai, and Vladimir Kononov.
  5. All records and files in all formats belonging to the separatist government (including the executive and the legislature), the courts, the Communist Party of Donbass, "The Workers' and Peasants' Armed Forces", and the "People's Commissariat of Internal Affairs" will be turned over to the Armed Forces of Ukraine, completely intact.
  6. The Communist Party of Donbass will be dissolved, banned from re-forming, and the executive body of the party will be taken into custody by the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
  7. The "United People's Soviet Republic" and all of its institutions will be dissolved. The territory formerly under its control in the Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts will be fully reintegrated with Ukraine proper and placed back under the control of the legitimate central and regional governments. New elections to fill the empty seats on the oblast councils which represent said territory will be held within 60 days of this reintegration occurring.
  8. All persons held by the "United People's Soviet Republic" as prisoners and hostages will be turned over to the Armed Forces of Ukraine. All judgements rendered and sentences handed down by the separatists' courts shall be declared null and void, with the exception being persons legitimately accused of serious crimes such as homicide and sexual assault. Their cases will be investigated and if necessary re-tried in a legitimate Ukrainian court.
  9. All known war criminals and those suspected of committing war crimes will be taken into custody by the Armed Forces of Ukraine and brought before a legitimate Ukrainian court. This will also apply to all officially wanted persons who may be residing in separatist-controlled territory.
  10. All persons involved in the shoot-down of Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 on 17 July 2014, and its subsequent cover-up, and all evidence of every kind pertaining to these events will be turned over to the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
  11. The radio stations "United People's Radio" and "Donetsk Radio" will be shut down, and transmission of all state propaganda will cease.
  12. The "Novorussian Bitcoin Exchange" will be shut down, as well as other illegitimate financial institutions. The assets contained within them and all other financial assets/capital of the "United People's Soviet Republic" and the individuals exempt from the general amnesty underlined in Article 16 will be seized by the Ukrainian government.
  13. All foreign military advisors and trainers, such as those from North Korea, will be taken into custody, declared persona non grata, and will be deported from Ukraine.
  14. All illegitimate foreign embassies will be closed. All foreign diplomatic staff at these embassies will be taken into custody, declared persona non grata, and will be deported from Ukraine. This includes the embassies of Vietnam, Nicaragua, Venezuela, North Korea, Russia, "South Ossetia", "Abkhazia", Paraguay, Laos, and Cambodia.
  15. Once all the other articles have been met/fulfilled, Ukraine will pursue constitutional reform along the lines of decentralization and devolution of powers to regional governments, which will take into account the over-centralization of the state and the differing needs, cultures, and political interests of Ukraine's various regions. The possibility of granting autonomy to the Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts, with the Autonomous Republic of Crimea as a model, will be subject to parliamentary debate and a feasibility study. Input from local residents on the future of their regions will be sought after.
  16. Once Articles 1 through 14 have been met/fulfilled, a general amnesty will be granted with some exceptions. This offer of amnesty will be extended to foreign nationals who are eligible, with one exception: while they will not be prosecuted, they will be deported from Ukraine and possibly subjected to a lifetime ban on re-entering the country. The exceptions for the general amnesty are:
  • Vadim Zaibert, Vladislav Surkov, Alexander Borodai, Vladimir Kononov
  • The executive branch of the separatist government.
  • The executive body of the Communist Party of Donbass
  • War criminals
  • Persons listed as wanted by the state
  • All persons involved in the shoot-down of Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 on 17 July 2014, and its subsequent cover-up
  • Persons legitimately accused of serious crimes such as homicide and sexual assault
  • The leadership of the "The Workers' and Peasants' Armed Forces" and the "People's Commissariat of Internal Affairs"
[M] Edited Article 12 because I forgot one very important part regarding the seizure of financial assets and capital.

My analysis of the imminent fed interest rate announcement

This has got nothing to do with bitcoin, but my intended audience is you guys... people who had the ability to see past the crap, forward thinking people.
So in a few hours the fed will make their announcement on whether or not to raise the interest rates. My prediciton is they will raise it with big fanfare...
  1. even though they secretly know they cannot raise it and
  2. they will raise it to TRY and convince the market that everything is just rosy and wonderful in the economy.
The canary in the coal mine is the bond market (the whole market, not just junk bonds). The disparity between the bond market and the stock market is growing bigger by the day. This exact same shit happened just before the 2008 crash. Then, moving over to just the junk bonds (high yield/high risk for investors hungry for profit) are also defaulting on their obiligations at record rate. I'm sitting on the edge of my seat waiting to see if they took note of this.
Now, just about every country in the world has most of their debt denominated in USD. All countries in the world currently owes 263% of the entire worlds GDP (last time I checked, about 2 weeks ago). GBP... what a dumbass measurement... because Gross Domestic Product is not the same as "Income taxes raised to pay for that debt". In the time I grew up economists all agreed: a country should not have more than 20% of their GBP in debt. Notice how that "20%" number correlates to the average tax rate of most countries? Funny how that just flew out the window.
When the rates are raised later today two things will happen.
  1. All these countries will now have to pay that extra .25% on huge amounts of debt that they already struggle to pay.
  2. The USD Index will climb (because you know... a rate raise shows a strong economy, hence the higher index). They will have to use more of their own (now weaker) currency to pay of those debts.
These countries are already struggling under the weight of their debt, and a rate raise will give them a double wammy.
So, to give you an idea: Here is america's Top 10 exports for 2014:
Machines, engines, pumps: US$219.8 billion (13.6% of total exports) Electronic equipment: $172.4 billion (10.6%) Oil: $155.6 billion (9.6%) Vehicles: $136 billion (8.4%) Aircraft, spacecraft: $125.2 billion (7.7%) Medical, technical equipment: $85 billion (5.2%) Gems, precious metals, coins: $64.1 billion (4%) Plastics: $63 billion (3.9%) Pharmaceuticals: $44 billion (2.7%) Organic chemicals: $42.3 billion (2.6%)
Who is going to buy this stuff from America when governments, hospitals, airlines and the general public the world over cannot afford these things anymore? What' worse is... those numbers above do not reflect profits, this is the gross export total as far I as know. http://www.worldstopexports.com/united-states-top-10-exports/2001. (And for those with inquisitive minds, check out China's Top 10 http://www.worldstopexports.com/chinas-top-10-exports/1952)
Then, the last part of my prediction:
Things will unravel very quickly after the raising of rates. I predict it will get so bad that the fed will turn interest rates negative within three months, or start a war with Russia, which BTW has shown zero "Russian Agression".
(Sidenote: Putin has followed every international law, every rule. The Crimean people did things "The American Democratic" way, you know, that “Our way of living” America fights wars over, and voted themselves to be part of Russia. This was was a great move since Ukraine is finished/done/wasted with 50% inflation. When I grew up voting was considered democracy, funny how this too is now somehow taboo, and labelled "aggression". The West denounced the referendum, but critical thinkers will say: If the vote was faked, why aren't people in Crimea super upset and protesting. Seriously... google/youtube it! The same baseless shit they've been spewing out about bitcoin is the exact same baselss shit they spew out about Russia. http://www.buzzfeed.com/maxseddon/french-lawmakers-visit-crimea-pose-with-a-shirt-t
"Over these two days we saw that there is no occupation, no armed men, people are free,” Mariani told reporters. “This is a peaceful region and people here live freely and happily."
Oh... you're happy? Screw you. You excercized your democratic right? Screw you. We're going to impose completely baseless sactions to an already very fragile worldwide economy! Even Italy is saying this is BS. http://www.thelocal.it/20151210/italy-stalls-extension-of-sanctions-against-russia
And guess what, the same plane that carries around the american president is now in trouble because of the BS sanctions http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/international/business/fate-of-uss-iconic-boeing-747-jets-lies-in-hands-of-russias-airbridgecargo/articleshow/50178748.cms )
Either way, my prediction doesn't really matter because
  1. If they raise rates - bitcoin might show a slight drop, and then a big increase in 3 months time
  2. If they keep it the same, signalling that all isn't as rosy as the talking heads have been saying... bitcoin will rise.
  3. They might just short circuit the whole thing, get it over and done with and just DROP the rate by 25 basis points, get true ZIRP, shock the markets like never before, in which case a lot of people will wake up, buy bitcoin, and cause the price to rise.
How do I do that "remind me in 3 months" thing again?
